What is Taper?
Potentiometer taper refers to the relationship between the position of the potentiometer’s knob and the corresponding change in resistance. Essentially, taper determines how the output changes as you turn the potentiometer. This is especially important for audio applications like guitars because it controls how smoothly volume or tone changes as you adjust the knob.
Types of Potentiometer Taper
AUDIO TAPER (LOGARITHMIC TAPER OR A TAPER)
Description: In an audio or logarithmic taper potentiometer, the resistance changes slowly at first, then more rapidly as you turn the knob further. This taper follows a logarithmic curve, which is designed to mimic the way human hearing perceives changes in sound.
Effect: Volume or tone adjustments feel more natural and gradual, especially for volume controls. Most of the noticeable change happens in the middle and upper range of the knob’s rotation, making it easier to make fine adjustments in the early stages.
Best For: Volume controls, as it gives a smoother, more natural increase or decrease in sound.
LINEAR TAPER (B TAPER)
Description: In a linear taper potentiometer, the resistance changes at a consistent, proportional rate across the full range of the knob's rotation. This means that at 50% rotation, the resistance is at 50% of the total value, and at 75% rotation, the resistance is at 75%, and so on.
Effect: The change in volume or tone occurs in equal steps. However, since human perception of sound is logarithmic, linear taper pots often feel like they make abrupt changes in volume, particularly near the higher end of the control.
Best For: Tone controls or certain situations where even control is desired.

The choice of taper significantly affects how your guitar or other audio equipment responds to your adjustments. For example, a linear taper might seem to "jump" in volume, while an audio taper feels smoother and more intuitive. Choosing the right taper depends on how you want your controls to behave.
